Celebrating Women at Ridgeview

This International Women’s Day we’re shining a light on some of the incredible women we have the privilege of working with at Ridgeview. “Embracing Equity” is the theme for 2023, and when we amplify women’s voices, we’re one step closer to a diverse, equitable and inclusive world for all. Read on to discover what inspires them and their vision for a future free of bias, where difference is valued and celebrated.

WHAT FEMALE STEREOTYPE DO YOU LOVE TO PROVE WRONG?

Karate has shaped me to become who I am today and it’s given me the confidence to walk alone. It’s an all-inclusive sport that promotes positive well-being, but it’s no secret that sometimes women can feel like an outsider in a male-dominated environment. The stereotype that “martial arts is a man’s sport” has pushed me to do my best to prove this wrong. I have Karate to thank for my physical, mental and emotional strength in all aspects of my life and is a constant reminder that we can be as good as our male counterparts. It’s not just about physical strength… its an ongoing journey of one’s discipline, belief, confidence and safety. The dojo promotes respect, so although I train predominately with men and compete in world championships, I haven’t had to work harder to achieve the same outcome as they have.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH WOMEN?

That they lean into their passion and strengths. They focus on what they’re naturally great at and don’t spend hours trying to master things they don’t find productive. I find that they ask for help when its needed and if someone else’s strength is required to complete the task, delegation isn’t seen as a bad thing. Most importantly, they’ll always have good recommendations on restaurants and beauty treatments!

WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER?

Choosing courage over comfort, whether that’s participating in a male dominated Dojo or tackling difficult issues that are feared or on hold. I’d say there’s never an end to practising these values.

IF I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, IT WOULD BE…

Not to react to hesitation but to lean in and embrace it. Tell yourself you’re going to achieve it and don’t fear any obstacles! Oh, and not to wait for the “perfect time”. Remember that you are in control and nobody can tell you when the time is right for you.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF WOMEN?

I’ve been very fortunate to know innovative and brave women throughout my life. Their perspective of leadership (regardless of career and personal life) has shown me the importance of finding your voice and being assertive. I’ve learnt that spending time conforming to a preconceived system that doesn’t work for me means it’s harder to create positive influence. So, I visualise a future where women are empowered to make impactful decisions for themselves, and not playing a part in ticking a ‘diversity quota’ box. I want to see women be assertive with their personal values and beliefs without having to compromise, so that they’re seen as role models and their voice is a priority.

This can’t be achieved by putting men down either! My father’s approach towards raising confident and independent daughters has always made me feel empowered. I hope that through teaching self-defence with female run classes, I can inspire women and girls to be strong, fearless and independent. It is an absolute privilege to support other women to show the world who they are, unapologetically, and to have the freedom to live their life, their way.

WHAT FEMALE STEREOTYPE DO YOU LOVE TO PROVE WRONG?

Women are often perceived to be more emotional than men and we shouldn’t feel the need to apologise for that. Emotion breeds passion and passion helps achieve goals and goals make dreams a reality.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH WOMEN?

I think it is important to work with a diverse range of people, but it is particularly inspiring working for a female CEO and with so many strong, successful women. It is a constant reminder of how far we have come in the last 50 years.

WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER?

Femininity

IF I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, IT WOULD BE…

Worry less about what people think of you and follow your dreams with confidence.

MY VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IS…

For senior positions to be balanced male/female. For women to be able to return to work after having a family, without having to apologise, take a pay cut or lose their career. We are sent to school, encouraged to go to university or get a career and then asked when we are going to start a family, with little support around getting back into the workplace afterwards.

AS A WOMAN, I APSIRE TO BE…

Self-confident, authentic and determined.

A PIECE OF ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO A WOMAN THINKING OF A SIMILAR CAREER IS…

Be prepared to get stuck in and get your hands dirty!

A WOMAN WHO INSPIRES ME IS…

My Nan, she was awesome!

IF I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, IT WOULD BE…

Travel, travel, travel!

AS A WOMAN AT RIDGEVIEW…

It feels good to be supported to break into the traditionally male dominated industry of production/agriculture.

Karolina Niemyjska | People Administrator

WHAT FEMALE STEREOTYPE DO YOU LOVE TO PROVE WRONG?

That women don’t know what they want and if they do, they are often perceived as mean or less feminine.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH WOMEN?

The encouragement and understanding are what I like the most. I love women supporting women at work.

IF I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, IT WOULD BE…

You are enough.

MY VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IS…

Not having to challenge the stereotypes or prove anything. I want every person to be perceived not by our gender but as individuals.

LIZ MORGAN | Technical Winemaker

AS WOMAN, I ASPIRE TO BE…

A top mum and a good winemaker. The first one keeps me pretty busy for now!

I’M INSIPRED BY…

All the women scientists, past and present, who have contributed so much to every field of science.

A PIECE OF ADVICE I WOULD GIVE TO A WOMAN THINKING ABOUT A SIMILAR CAREER IS…

Follow what interests you the most; there are so many different careers in science to choose from.

IF I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF ONE THING, IT WOULD BE…

Don’t be afraid to change direction if you need to, even if it feels like a leap into the unknown!

Silvia Perez Del Puerto | Ecommerce Administrator

WHAT FEMALE STEREOTYPE DO YOU LOVE TO PROVE WRONG?

Women should never feel less than men or anyone for that matter so I try to walk with my head held high, projecting confidence in what I do. This doesn’t mean I always manage it but I believe that even when we fail, we should be proud because at least we tried!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING WITH WOMEN?

I love seeing the passion in women at work. The feeling of: ”I am doing this because it is what I want to do and I am going to try my best”.

WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER?

Just one? I’m joking! I think if I had to choose it’ll be the ability to carry on. The sun always shines regardless of the clouds.

IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Everything that is happening will make you who you are and that, it’s a good thing.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF WOMEN?

We are strong and powerful and we don’t need to be labelled or compared to anything or anyone.
